This is a big game of Classical Hack, as organised by Alan - Barbarians taking on a Roman Settlement.
This wasn't the only game going on in the Hall. On the neighbouring tables, a large game of 40K was being played at the same time.
An early kick off (9 to 10am) at the Baptist Hall. For those who don't follow the group on Facebook the info is as follows...

This time the club will be doing the battle of Presque Isle, Royal Navy vs. the US Navy on Lake Erie, in 1813 (part of the War of 1812). This is the main game of the day, allowing Martin to sail his paper boats a bit. There should be room for 7-8 players, with each player getting to command a couple of craft.

There's also a 40K game arranged for the day as well. An Armageddon themed Apocalypse with Orks against a variety of Imperium forces. Anyone who would like to join in is welcome, however, they are in great need of Imperial forces. If you do want to join in, please contact Scott Bradford ASAP.

The hall will also be free for any other games that people may wish to play but can't make it for the full day.

Also people should keep June 20th free as it's Waterloo time! Another all-day event, this time commemorating the 200th anniversary of the battle.
-- From the Furness Wargamers Site --
Adminhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11233884638573436304noreply@blogger.com0Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria, UK54.12075857159892 -3.21950554365537354.120177071598917 -3.2207660436553729 54.121340071598922 -3.2182450436553731tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7245819634119003514.post-25802996409072504412014-05-11T13:00:00.000+01:002014-05-15T13:53:45.826+01:00Fuentes de OnoroThe belated St. George's Day took place on Saturday, as 10 players, plus the GM and onlookers participated in a re-fight of Fuentes de Onoro. The goal of the French assault was to either force a way through the village or find a way around the British defensive positions on the outlying hills.
The forces sent against the main village were badly mauled as Muskets and Canister rained down on them. Only a couple of columns managed to get to launch an assault in the entire game.
The French manage to take the outlying village that pinned the corner of the British defense. The counter-assault by the British ended disastrously with the total loss of the division.
The village of Fuentes do Onoro never really threatened to fall to direct assault, but the position was untenable with the roads to the rear open to the French, and the British are forced to withdraw.

Game of the day is The Battle of Fuentes de Onoro, fought during the Peninsular campaign of the Napoleonic Wars. A closely fought battle in real life, it should be the same on the tabletop where 2000+ 25mm figures will be in action.

A final play-test of the rules Matt has put together should be happening at this Tuesdays Club Night for anyone who wants to check them out in advance.

On Saturday itself the set up is from 8:30am, but the game probably wont start until about 10am. There will be more than enough brigades available for any one who wishes to turn up and command a force. The games normally go on till around 4pm, with a break for food around about midday.
-- From the Furness Wargamers Site --
Adminhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11233884638573436304noreply@blogger.com0Abbey Road Baptist Church, 27 Carlton Avenue, Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria LA13 9AT, UK54.1206402 -3.219686499999966128.598605699999997 -44.528280499999966 79.6426747 38.088907500000033tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7245819634119003514.post-12806285650788962612014-04-16T19:00:00.000+01:002014-04-16T19:00:02.018+01:00St George's DelayedThe intended St George's Day \ weekend game (The Napoleonic Battle of Fuentes de Onoro) has been put off till May due to the Matt (and his figures) not being available.

Instead, this coming weekend, Saturday, 19th April, there is a couple of Warhammer 40K\30K games planned. The 30K game (Istvaan Drop Site Massacre) organised by Keiron for the experts, and another game for the other 40K regulars and more casual gamers.

There is also the likelihood of other games happening as well, and there could be a test of Martin's 1812 rules for the proposed Phalanx convention game - The Battle of Lake Erie.
OK folks, its time to consider the annual club outing. We like to go to a big games show as a club at least once a year. Usually we go to St Helens for "Phalanx", as its the only real games show in the North west, but we have been known to go to Sheffield for "Triples", as its the biggest show in the north. For a variety of reasons we've missed both this year, and the suggestion is that we go to Smoggycon in Middlesbrough on 23rd November.

Now I've not done this show, but I'm told its very good, and also quite large. Some members I know are going to go down there in private cars, but we do have the option to hire a small minibus, 8-13 people (although I wouldnt want to take more than ten. Its a long haul and these things can get cramped. Besides we will have stuff to take down there - and probably much more to bring back!) The club can pay for the rental of the van, but we will have to ask for petrol money. Its £2.50 entrance to the show, but children, wives, girlfriends and trophy WAGS get in free.

I did ask Smoggycon if we could put a game on. This has the advantage of getting our name known and it also means we can get in free, but unfortunately they have told me they have run out of space. However, we are on the list for next year.

For those of you who have never been to a show, basically they are run by local clubs and involve several large rooms filled with goodies. Around the edges there are a variety of traders selling you everything from 40K to Dinowars, dice through to terrain, boxes through to beanbags. Some of it can be painted and second hand too, so you might get a bargain. One area will be fenced off as a flea market (bring and buy stall) where you can pick up more bargains or get rid of anything you dont want for ££££ (which you will then spend on other things in the show. You might not plan this, but it will happen anyway).

In the centre of the room will be a series of games, put on by local clubs. They come in two flavours - demo games, which are basically large set piece specials with superb scenary and painting and people explaining to you what happened, or participation games, which are usually smaller and more basic but which you can actively join in with. They can be anything from sinking aircraft carriers to attacking the death star to recreating skirmishes from historical films.

Sometimes shows will have charity appeals (British Legion is very popular) and they may have reenactors too. Sometimes they do a bit of reenacting, but usually they are just recruiting/explaining. Most shows have catering facilities, but they are usually very expensive and/or poor quality, so I would advise bringing food along.

Kick off is at 10AM and people will start to pack up at about 4PM. We will have to leave very early to get there for a reasonable start, as in we need to leave Barrow by 8AM at the latest (yes there really is such a time on a Saturday) If you are interested, I need to collect your names asap and also a pick up point and a phone number so we can contact you to wake you up.

And Martin is trying to arrange a trip down to it...
<span class="messageBody" data-ft="{"type":3}">We do like to support them, as they are now the only real wargames show in the north west of England. Besides, its a very good day out!
Now, we can organise a minivan to take us down, or we can go by cars - it really depends how many want to go, but I would urge you to try it!"

<span class="messageBody" data-ft="{"type":3}">

<span class="messageBody" data-ft="{"type":3}">We're not arranging a demo game this year so people are free to roam wherever they pleased (not that it ever stopped them in the past). Think the entrance fee for club members will be covered by club funds as usual.

Same location as usual, the Abbey Baptists Hall, and kick-off normally round 10ish, the game normally going on till late afternoon.
Organised by Paul, the campaign managed to span over 6 weeks, or from 1494 to 1501 in game time, which is probably as long as it could last, and during it course expanded from six to eight players. Being one of Paul's campaigns the rules and units changed from week to week as new DaVinci inspired contraptions came into play.
On Saturday, 15th October, the club held a Warhammer Fantasy Tournament.

The tournament consisted of 3 rounds using 1600 point armies with points and prizes for in game victory points and army painting. Due to a player pulling out and a non-show, the tournament was down to 6 contestants. However, with all miniatures painted and good looking tables, the games were a spectacle to behold.

Vampire counts smashed Dwarf, who in turn were crumbled to dust by Wood Elves (yes, you heard right, Wood Elves?!). Empire knights clashed against Empire gun lines and Tomb kings looked pretty ridding around in chariots whilst popping up from under the sand to snip and pound any troops foolish enough to stand still for too long.

All players enjoyed themselves (I think) and learnt a lot. As with many tournaments, the final points do not truly reflect how close some of the games were, being that victory points are only gained for those units completely removed from the table.

I would just like to say a great thank-you to all the players who not only turned up, but put in weeks (or even months) of preparation in painting and practicing for the tournament.

Hello.

Back in the day when I had more time and no money (not that i have any now- I just don't have any time either!), I used to do some painting for commission and also just to sell.

One way to cover the cost of buy new miniatures can be to buy two sets, and then paint one, to sell it to cover the cost of the first. This works particularly well with historic miniatures, as buyers will tend to be prepared to pay twice the base cost for a well/table standard painted model or unit. Due to the amount of Games Workshop miniatures and the type of buyer means it is a lot harder to get a good price. I am too slow a painter to ever actually sell models for profit - I worked out once I would make about £1 an hour!

If you have some time, and can't quite justify buying that new unit, give it a go.

I spend a lot of time at work being entertained by jolly good podcasts covering a wide spread of gaming (and sometimes I even do some work there!). Here is my Pick of the Pods. Not a definitive list, but the result of a few years of listening and searching of those I like to listen to:

The D6 Generation- a benchmark in podcasting. Great conversation and fun about a wide variety of gaming- from wargames, to roleplay and boardgames, all in American. They even cover a dose of computer gaming. These guys have been going a long time and know their stuff. If you are looking for general gaming entertainment, I would recommend this one. Only downside maybe the long length of the podcasts, however, for me, this is a good thing. Famous gamer interviews, family viewing and definitely ‘No hate’.

The Club is arranging a trip down to Phalanx in St Helens on Saturday, 18th June.

This is now the only major wargames show in the North West this year.

We have also been invited to run a game down there, so it looks like a re-run of the St George's Day Trafalgar game will be happening. Please note that participating\press-ganged players will not be forced to stay at the table 100% of the time.

Martin says the club has enough funds to cover the £3 cost of admission, but people will probably have to make their own way down, or we can organise a convoy down or arrange a meet up at the nearby services. The Lesure Centre where it is being held at can be a bit hard to find for first time visitors.

The club has visited this 'local' show on a number of occasions and in 2007 even managed to win 'Best Demo game' with Matt and Alan's 'Eagle of the Ninth' table.
-- From the Furness Wargamers Site --
Adminhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11233884638573436304noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7245819634119003514.post-42217577468550077742011-05-30T21:30:00.001+01:002011-05-30T21:30:01.279+01:00How to BlogIn response to Marks request on the mailing list as to how to post on blogger here's a brief how to...

In order to use blogger you need an email and password linked to Google Apps, this can be done here https://www.google.com/accounts/NewAccount . If your using GMail then I think that this already done for you. It can be any Email address that belongs to you.

Second you need the blog admin (i.e. Me) to give you authoring permissions. ( I've already sent a few invites to those who've requested it.) Once this is done you can access the authoring functions of the blog by visiting http://www.blogger.com and logging on using your email and Google password from above.

There should only appear one blog in the list that appears, and it should be this one. You can then select New Post to create a new post (surprise) . Most of the fields are pretty obvious in their functions. Your post should be auto-saving regularly so no real worry in losing much info when writing.

Labels are a way of grouping posts together, best just to use a number of short descriptions seperated by a ',' or leave it blank.

The 'Preview' button is useful just to get an idea how your post will look.

Post Options, below the input box, allows the post to be timed for future posting (or for retro-actively posting) or you can display it immediately.

In any event the post will not be displayed unless the Publish Post button is used.

Additional help is available here.
-- From the Furness Wargamers Site --
Adminhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11233884638573436304noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7245819634119003514.post-72549916227196783552011-05-10T13:00:00.001+01:002011-05-10T13:00:05.580+01:00www site is activeHave switched the blog to use http://www.furnesswargamers.org/ so it now appears like a 'proper' website. The previous blog.furnesswargamers.org should now be inactive.

Can still create new blogs on other sub-sites on the Domain, so if any group within the club need their own private campaign blogs I can set it up for them (i.e. we could set up 40K.furnesswargamers.org )

Phil should now be listed as a moderator for the Mail-list and both he and Martin have been invited to be authors on this site so that they can post messages. Any one else who wishes to contribute just needs to get in touch with details of their Google Account email address.

Will also collect a list of addresses tonight at the club to add to the mailing list.
-- From the Furness Wargamers Site --
Adminhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11233884638573436304noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7245819634119003514.post-69935266425318205262011-05-07T12:16:00.000+01:002011-05-07T12:16:41.127+01:00From Blog to Mail ListHave changed the blog settings so that it will email any posts to the FW mailing list; so hopefully everyone on the list should be getting a copy of this blog post.

This should work fine for any poster on the blog so long as the poster is also a member of the mailing list.

Think this will be useful in sending out announcements (The first proper one will probably be about Phalanx once we start recruiting more members onto the list.)

If this functionality annoys the majority of people then I can easily remove it.
-- From the Furness Wargamers Site --
Adminhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11233884638573436304noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7245819634119003514.post-66646699662801053092011-05-03T23:44:00.001+01:002011-05-04T17:10:57.855+01:00First PostA first post on the Furness Wargamers blog, which is a candidate for being the FW's principle outward facing web presence.

The blog isn't restricted to one person posting on it, and I would prefer it not to be so. Up to 100 contributers are allowed. So long as the user has a Google account login (which does not need to be a GMail one, any valid email address can be used to set one up, so, for example, a yahoo mail address can be used) then the admin can set them up to post on the site and give them other privileges.

Permissions on comments on posts can be set to be added at multiple levels, and can be moderated if desired and\or restricted to members or those with a valid open id to prevent random spam.

If this does become the principal online point of contact I can set the web address to be www.furnesswargamers.org or blog.furnesswargamers.org rather than the blogger default (which will still remain as a point of entry).

Since I have control of the domain and have linked it to google apps, I can create unique email addresses for you in google mail with the format <silly-or-not-name>@furnesswargamers.org. You may wish this to obtain a level of anonymity or detachment from you conventional account. This also gives you access to other google apps such as Picasa and Blogger, but of course depends upon the continued existence of the FW domain. These mail addresses allow for email forwarding so you can re-direct the mail to your central mail address.
-- From the Furness Wargamers Site --
Adminhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11233884638573436304noreply@blogger.com0
